Xiaomi already has cell phones with 48 MP and 64 MP cameras. Now, it is preparing four new models with a 108 MP camera, according to the XDA Developers. The company is expected to use Isocell Bright HMX in all of them, a sensor announced in August by Samsung.
The clue about the four smartphones appears in the Mi Gallery application of the MIUI interface. It started to support the display of photos with 108 MP for devices that use the codenames “toucan”, “draco”, “umi” and “cmi”.
The terms refer to smartphones that have not yet been launched and may leave the factory under both the Xiaomi brand and its subsidiary Redmi. It is worth remembering that the company has already announced that it will launch a cell phone with Samsung’s new camera sensor.
Xiaomi collaborated with the creation of the Isocell Bright HMX. According to its co-founder and president, Lin Bin, the contribution occurred “from the initial conceptual stage to production, which resulted in an innovative 108 megapixel image sensor”.
The Isocell Bright HMX is the first sensor with 1 / 1.33 inch (or 0.75 inch), a size that approximates that of 1 inch sensors from mirrorless cameras such as Sony RX10 IV, Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II and Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200.
It has Smart-ISO, a mechanism created to identify the ambient lighting and automatically adjust the ISO. The sensor is also capable of recording videos with 6K resolution (6,016 x 3,384 pixels) at 30 frames per second.
Although the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is considered one of the main candidates to receive the new sensor, the XDA Developers believes that none of the codenames refer to the cell phone. According to the website, the Mi Gallery code still has no mention of the device.
