Uber drivers in Brazil demonstrate for tariff increase

Drivers of apps like Uber called for stoppages in several countries this Wednesday (8) in protest for a readjustment in the value of the races. The demonstration also involves acts in some cities.

In São Paulo, for example, drivers met in the Anhangabaú Valley, in the city center. The complaints were directed especially at Uber, but there were also criticisms of 99, Cabify, Wappa and Ladydriver.

Drivers call for an increase in the value of fares and a reduction in fees charged by platforms, as fuel costs, for example, increase. They also advocate the creation of mechanisms that offer more security to those who are driving.

According to the Twitter, the group asks for a readjustment of R $ 2 on the basic fare paid by Uber passengers and an increase in the value of the kilometer traveled. There is also a request for a 15% to 20% reduction in the fee charged by the platform and a more rigorous registration for passengers.

The stoppage was mainly reported on WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook both by organized groups, such as the São Paulo Application Drivers Association (Amasp), and by individual drivers.

The category proposes that everyone turn off the application between 12:00 am and 11:59 pm this Wednesday in states like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Tocantins, Pernambuco, Espírito Santo and Bahia. However, as not all drivers participate in associations, it is likely that many will not be aware of the demonstration.

Protest comes before Uber debut on the stock exchange

This is yet another movement in protest of the working conditions of application drivers. It takes place days before Uber’s IPO on the Stock Exchange, scheduled for Friday (10).

The company expects to raise US $ 10 billion with its initial public offering (IPO), which would bring it to a marked value of US $ 84 billion. Drivers criticize the fact that their working conditions have not improved, even though the company is growing.

In the United States, drivers from cities like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago also held demonstrations. As in Brazil, the intention is to claim greater gains from racing.

Sought by Tecnoblog, Uber stated that, as it is a decentralized movement, it still does not have a position on the standstill. We will update this post if the company comes back to manifest itself.
