The re-registration of prepaid cell phones applies to all of Brazil as of this Monday (2): customers of sure, TIM, Live, Hi, Algar and Sercomtel who have incomplete registration with the operator must provide additional data so that their line is not blocked. This measure required by Anatel wants to prevent fraud with third party CPF.
The prepaid registration update started in April for Area Code 62 (Goiás). In July, it was the turn of nine states – Acre, Goiás (Area codes 61 and 64), Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rondônia, Tocantins and Santa Catarina – in addition to the Federal District.
Now, as of September 2, the measure will be applied in the remaining states: Alagoas, Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Pará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Roraima, São Paulo and Sergipe.
You will need to provide your full name, social security number (in the case of individuals) and full address with zip code. “Whoever does not re-register within the period stipulated by the operator will have their line blocked until the registration is updated”, warns SindiTelebrasil, a union that represents Brazilian operators, in a statement.
Operators notify customers via SMS or call
Operators will alert customers with registration pending issues through various means: via SMS, voicer (recorded voice call), calls with human attendant, pop-ups on the cell phone screen, among others.
In the case of SMS, the message may vary slightly: TIM will say “your registration is incomplete and you need to update it within 15 days”. Claro will ask you to “call 1052 and update your data so as not to lose your number”.
As of March 2020, operators will adopt a new registration model for future prepaid activations. Currently, to activate a prepaid line, just buy a chip, insert it into the device and enter the CPF – sometimes even an invalid number is accepted. The objective is to avoid fraud: some CPFs appear with more than 50 contracted numbers, even without the holder knowing.
