Sony presented on Wednesday (30) its balance sheet for the third quarter of 2019, which points to the sale of 2.8 million units of PlayStation 4. With the result, the console reached 102.8 million units sold and surpassed the PlayStation 1 and the Nintendo Wii.
The numbers recorded between July and September made the PlayStation 4 become the second best-selling console of all time. The PlayStation 1, which occupied this position, sold 102.5 million units. The Nintendo Wii, in turn, sold 101.6 million.
The list of best-selling consoles is still led by the PlayStation 2, with 155 million units. At the end of the cycle, the PS4 is unlikely to overcome it. Sony has even cut its sales forecast for the fiscal year, which ends in April 2020.
The manufacturer believed in July that it would sell 15 million units of the PlayStation 4 between May 2019 and April 2020. The console has already reached 6 million units, but the new target for the period is 13.5 million units.
Compared to the third quarter of 2018, Sony’s games division posted a 17% drop in revenue and a 28% drop in profit. The numbers are not expected to be as exciting until the launch of the PlayStation 5, scheduled for the end of 2020.
The balance sheet indicates that, despite the fall in the games division, Sony had a record profit of 279 billion yen (about R $ 10 billion) in the third quarter. Sony Music grew 7.5% over the same period in 2018.
Sony Pictures grew 8.5% and the camera sensor division was up 22%. Sony’s electronics division, which includes smartphones, cameras and TVs, fell 11.2%. Cell phones pulled that result down. In the third quarter of 2018, Sony had sold 1.6 million smartphones. Now, the company has sold only 600,000 units.
