THE Samsung announced its first system-on-a-chip with 5G integrated: this is the Exynos 980, which will be used in future intermediary phones. It has the first processor with Cortex-A77 cores; up to 108 megapixel cameras are supported, 4K video encoding at 120 frames per second, and neural processing through a dedicated NPU.
The Exynos 980 has a octa-core processor with two Cortex-A77 cores of 2.2 GHz for heavy duty, and six Cortex-A55 cores of 1.8 GHz for less demanding processes. According to ARM, the Cortex-A77 has “performance comparable to today’s traditional notebooks”.
Still, the Exynos 980 is not designed for top of the line, but for premium middlemen. It is a successor to the Exynos 9610, present in the Galaxy A50 and Motorola One Vision. In addition to the faster CPU, it has a graphics chip Mali-G76 MP5 is NPU (neural processing unit) built-in for artificial intelligence tasks.
Exynos 980 combines 4G and 5G to reach 3.55 Gb / s
Samsung’s new system-on-a-chip (SoC) has a integrated 5G modem, reducing energy consumption and the space occupied on the cell phone’s motherboard. It has a maximum theoretical capacity of 2.55 Gb / s for downloading and 1.28 Gb / s for uploading at frequencies below 6 GHz; millimeter wave mmWave technology is not supported.
The modem also allows downloadable 4G connections at up to 1 Gb / s; and can use 4G and 5G networks at the same time, reaching a theoretical maximum of 3.55 Gb / s in the downlink. In addition, it is compatible with the 802.11ax standard, also known as Wi-Fi 6, which has a maximum theoretical capacity of 14 Gb / s.
What about cameras, the Exynos 980 supports a single sensor of up to 108 megapixels; Samsung already has the Isocell Bright HMX that will be used on Xiaomi phones. In the case of a dual camera, the chip is limited to 20 MP + 20 MP.
The ISP (image signal processor) supports up to five individual sensors and is capable of processing three of them simultaneously. We also find support for 4K video encoding and decoding at up to 120 frames per second (fps), in addition to HDR10 + with dynamic mapping for brighter colors.
Exynos 980 should start mass production until the end of the yearusing FinFET process technology from 8 nanometers.
