Radeon 600 Series are the new low-cost GPUs from AMD

Without making a noise, the OMG updated its list of low-cost GPUs this week. But we are not necessarily talking about a new line: we can say that the Radeon 600 Series, as it was named, is a reinterpretation of some models of the current Radeon 500 family.

There are five GPUs: Radeon RX 640, Radeon 630, Radeon 625, Radeon 620 and Radeon 610. Note that only the first one has “RX” in its name. Despite this, this model is not even more advanced than the Radeon RX 580X, for example, the most powerful GPU in the RX 500 series among the options for laptops (and the one that is just below the Vega models).

Looking at the specifications, we note that the AMD Radeon RX 640 is equivalent to the AMD Radeon 550X GPU. This equivalence pattern also exists on the other models in the Radeon 600 series:

  • AMD Radeon RX 640 – Radeon 550X
  • AMD Radeon 630 – Radeon 540X
  • AMD Radeon 625 – Radeon 535
  • AMD Radeon 620 – Radeon 530
  • AMD Radeon 610 – Radeon 520

The reasons why AMD practically relaunched part of the Radeon 500 series with new names are unclear. One possibility is that this is a strategy to reposition brand options in the face of the arrival of Intel Gen11 GPUs.

At least initially, all new GPUs will be aimed at OEM computers, that is, they will be supplied only to PC manufacturers, which is why AMD did not disclose prices – it is only known that they appear as low cost options for medium.

As the table above makes clear, the Radeon RX 640 and Radeon 630 GPUs are the most powerful in the series (which is not to say that they will perform well in games). Perhaps that is why they are the only options targeted at desktops and laptops – the other models will only appear on notebooks.

Equipment based on the Radeon 600 Series is expected to start being announced in September.
