Cellular operators are fighting over customers, and the number of number portability requests in Brazil shows that competition is good: the number of lines ported between January and October 2019 has already exceeded the volume for the entire year 2018.
The figures released by ABR Telecom, the entity responsible for managing number portability, reveal that there were 6.9 million migration requests for mobile lines in the first 10 months of the year, with 5.9 million of them being made.
With just over two months to the end of 2019, the result already exceeds the year 2018, with 6.1 million orders and 5.2 million lines ported. Many of the requests are not fulfilled due to the user’s withdrawal – which is often approached by the originating operator with promotions and advantages in case it cancels portability.
In fixed telephony, however, the numbers for 2019 have not yet reached the previous year: there were 1.5 million orders with 1.2 million effective portabilities, against 1.7 million requests and 1.4 million numbers migrated in 2018. Data are from January 1, 2019 to October 28, 2019.
The entity does not disclose the portability ranking among operators, but during its disclosure of financial results, Claro claimed to have the leadership of ported cell phone numbers with a large margin of difference for competitors. Since number portability came into effect in 2008, more than 54.8 million migrations have been carried out.
