After many leaks, the Motorola razr it’s official: it’s a foldable cell phone with a design similar to the classic V3 of the past decade. The 6.2-inch screen folds inward without leaving a crease, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Fold, and comes with an external display. This smartphone will be launched in the US for $ 1,499 and will arrive in Brazil in January 2020.
The highlight of the Motorola Razr is, of course, its folding screen: here we have a 6.2-inch OLED panel made of plastic. It has a 2142 x 876 resolution and an ultrawide 21: 9 aspect ratio. The display is manufactured by two companies in China: BOE, which also provides screens for the Huawei Mate X; and TCL, which launches phones with Palm and Blackberry brands.
The Flex View folding screen does not leave a crease because it folds in a different way than the Galaxy Fold. There is an empty space around the hinge, allowing the display to curve smoothly; it’s like taking a sheet of paper and putting the top and bottom together.
Even so, the folding screen is “zero gap”, that is, it leaves no space at the edges when it is closed. This prevents dust and debris from entering, an issue that affected the original Galaxy Fold.
When the Motorola Razr is closed, you can use the secondary 2.7-inch OLED screen with 800 x 600 resolution. It’s called Quick View and lets you see notifications, make calls, answer messages, control music playback and take selfies.
There are two cameras: a 16 megapixel external with Night Vision mode; and an internal 5 megapixel camera inside a notch on the screen.
Motorola ended up saving on some specifications: the processor is the Snapdragon 710, manufactured in the 10-nanometer process and launched more than a year ago. There are 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. As for the battery, it is divided into two sections that have a total capacity of 2,510 mAh.
The phone uses a stainless steel frame and Gorilla Glass 3D on the outside. Meanwhile, the inside has a coating that offers resistance to splashing water (just don’t try to swim with the Razr).
Motorola Razr has V3 chin and retro mode
The chin of the V3 is still present in the Motorola Razr: here, this part houses the on / off button with built-in digital reader, the antennas and the speaker. The cell antenna was designed to fit in a space half the size of today’s smartphones.
And to reinforce nostalgia, Motorola put a “Retro Razr” mode here which emulates a T9 alphanumeric keyboard at the bottom and displays the old V3 interface – which really works. You only navigate with the directional control; you can’t touch the icons. Select the message button to open the standard Android app; enter a number and listen for dialing sounds with each key press.
In the USA, the Motorola Razr will be launched on January 9, 2020 exclusively by the operator Verizon; pre-order starts on December 26th. The foldable phone will cost $ 1,499.
The company will offer 24/7 chat support to Americans, as well as repairs within 24 hours. During the one-year warranty, the replacement or repair of the screen will be free of charge in the event of “defects incurred during normal use”; then, you will be charged $ 299 to replace the foldable display.
The Razr will also be launched in Brazil in January, but Motorola does not reveal the price for now.
