THE Microsoft is doing a hardware event this Wednesday (2) to renew the Surface line. The company announced products already expected, such as Surface Pro 7 with USB-C port and the Surface Laptop 3 with a new 15 inch version, but also the most different computer inside: the Surface Pro X, which runs Windows 10 and has an ARM processor.
Surface Pro X has Qualcomm’s custom chip
The Surface Pro X is a hybrid with a design similar to the Surface Pro and has a new 13 inch (2880 × 1920 pixels) touchscreen, maintaining the dimensions of the 12 inch model. According to Microsoft, this is the thinnest Surface ever launched, with a thickness of 5.3 mm; and its edges are the most compact ever seen on a 2-in-1 computer. The weight is only 760 grams.
But the news is inside. Instead of an Intel Core chip, Surface Pro X features a processor Surface SQ1, a customized version of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx with ARM architecture. The new hybrid is capable of offering three times more performance per watt than Surface Pro 6, according to Microsoft.
Surface SQ1 provides 9 teraflops of raw performance, with its graphics chip reaching 2 teraflops, the equivalent of an Xbox One. Microsoft says it has worked together with Qualcomm to include an artificial intelligence engine and improve chip performance, which pulls up to 7 watts, versus 2 watts for most ARM processors.

And how are the applications? After all, Microsoft hasn’t launched any Surface with ARM since 2013. The company called Adobe on stage to demonstrate the Creative Cloud suite: it is possible to run Fresco, a new illustration tool compatible with the Surface Slim pen, which can be saved and recharged on the keyboard. And Qualcomm has already announced that it will support applications from Google, Microsoft, Mozilla and Symantec.
In the United States, the Surface Pro X (it really is “xis”) will be sold from November 5, with prices starting at US $ 999. Microsoft has never launched a Surface in Brazil, so we are unlikely to find it in stores hence.
Surface Pro 7 and Surface Laptop 3
We also had two more normal products. O Surface Pro 7 is a 2-in-1 with 12.3-inch screen and updated hardware, featuring 10th generation Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processors, 128 GB to 1 TB of flash storage and 4 GB to 16 GB of RAM. The main novelty is the USB-C port, which replaces the Mini DisplayPort.
The Surface Laptop 3 is a renewal of Microsoft’s ultraportable notebook. It also gained a USB-C connection and had updated hardware, with 10th generation Intel Core chips that can deliver twice the performance of the Surface Laptop 2 and triple the MacBook Air in the 13-inch version.
But now there is an even larger model, 15 inches, also with the famous 3: 2 aspect ratio, more square. And it is different in having not an Intel Core, but a processor AMD Ryzen Surface Edition, which is a custom chip with more powerful graphics and which, according to Microsoft, “is the most powerful processor in any laptop in that category today”. Jeez.
The Surface Pro 7 hits the US market on October 22 with prices starting at $ 749, while the Surface Laptop 3 will start at $ 999 (13.5 inches) and $ 1,199 (15 inches). Again, no forecast for Brazil.
