Microsoft removes Cortana from Android and iPhone in almost every country | Applications and Software

THE Microsoft will close the application Cortana for iPhone and Android in almost all countries where it is available, except the USA: the personal assistant will stop working on these platforms on January 31, 2020, and will be removed from the Microsoft Launcher. It is being repositioned for no longer competing with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Microsoft Cortana on Android

The Cortana will lose support on iOS and Android in these countries: Germany, Australia, Canada, China, Spain, Mexico, India and the United Kingdom. After January 31, user-created lists, tasks and reminders will no longer work on the mobile app or Microsoft Launcher, but can still be accessed through Cortana for Windows 10 or through the Microsoft To Do app – it is available on the web, iPhone , iPad, Android and Windows.

“To make Cortana more useful, we’re going to integrate it more deeply into Microsoft 365 productivity apps, and part of that evolution involves ending support for the mobile app on Android and iOS,” explains the company in a statement to the The Verge. The app was launched in 2015.

Microsoft: Cortana does not compete with Google or Alexa

Earlier this year, CEO Satya Nadella said that Microsoft no longer sees Cortana as a competitor of Alexa or Google Assistant: instead, it “needs to be a skill for Microsoft 365 subscribers”, a service that combines the Office 365 suite and Windows 10.

In fact, the assistant has been integrating with applications like Outlook for iOS and Android: she can read emails and invitations aloud; set up meetings analyzing your agenda and that of your co-workers, in order to find a vacant time; and generate a daily summary with important events and documents.

At the end of 2018, Cortana was transferred from Microsoft’s Artificial Intelligence division to the Experiences and Devices area, which includes Windows, Office and hardware products.

Cortana will still be available on Windows 10, but in a more limited way. In the May 2019 Update, it was decoupled from the system search, and now occupies a separate button on the taskbar. In the future, the assistant will also be separated into her own app, already available to participants of the Insider program.

In the October 2019 Update, Windows 10 is capable of running other voice assistants on the lock screen, in addition to Cortana. Microsoft has created a skill that allows you to make calls via Skype through Alexa, and has been testing to integrate the Amazon assistant to Xbox One.
