THE Microsoft sent out invitations to an event in New York on October 2, when it announces new hardware products: we hope to see updates for the Surface Book, Surface Go and Surface Pro; rumors also say that we will have a device code-named “Centaurus” with two screens and Windows.
According to the The Verge, Microsoft demonstrated a dual-screen Surface to its employees this year. It is a sign that the device is almost ready for launch; sources say the company wants to take it to market in 2020.
Rumors claim that Microsoft is preparing a device internally called “Centaurus”: it has two screens and is “capable of turning into a tablet, laptop, digital book, a larger tablet”, according to the Windows Central.
The consultancy IHS Markit says that, according to “supply chain information”, the new Surface will be launched in the first half of 2020 with two 9-inch screens and a 4: 3 ratio. It would come with the Intel Lakefield platform, a small motherboard that includes processor, memory and Wi-Fi.
The two-screen Surface is expected to launch with Windows Lite, a version of Windows 10 with fewer legacy components and a differentiated interface. It would be able to run Win32 programs from the store, in addition to universal apps.
Surface Go and Surface Book can be updated
Even if Microsoft does not introduce a two-screen device in October, it will certainly have hardware news to announce. Surface Go, released just over a year ago, could receive an update. The same goes for the Surface Book, with a detachable screen and graphics chip from Nvidia, which hasn’t been upgraded in two years.
Last year, Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, the all-in-one Surface Studio 2 and Surface Headphones. They are sold in dozens of countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, China, India and South Korea – but not in Brazil.
The Surface line brings a lot of money to Microsoft: this division earned about $ 1.2 billion in the second quarter, up 14% over the same period in 2018.
