THE Huawei scheduled an event in Munich, Germany, for Thursday (19), but we already have a good idea of what will be presented: Evan Blass, known for leaking products before launch, released promotional images of the Kill 30, Mate 30 Pro and Mate 30 Lite, plus an edition Porsche Design. The top of the line should have a screen with curved sides and a triple front camera.
The images show that the Mate 30 Pro will have a notch at the top of the screen to house three front cameras. The OLED screen has more curved sides than we are used to: it is the waterfall panel, or “waterfall”, that we saw in Vivo NEX 3. In the Chinese rival, the display was so curved that Vivo eliminated the physical on / off and volume control buttons, replacing them with virtual versions.
According to The Elec, the flexible screen of the Mate 30 Pro will be provided by LG Display, which may increase its market share in the coming months. Samsung dominates the production of OLED panels for smartphones, with 82% of global shipments in the second quarter of 2019, against 12% of China’s BOE and only 2% of LG Display. According to consultancy IHS Markit, LG’s share is expected to rise to 4% and 11% in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
The image also highlights the well-known circular cutout for the quadruple rear camera, which would consist of a pair of 40-megapixel sensors, a third 8-megapixel camera with optical zoom and a ToF (time of flight) sensor to detect depth.
In addition, the premium phone must be equipped with the Huawei Kirin 990 processor with an integrated 5G modem, 4,500 mAh battery with fast charging of 40 watts on the cable or 27 watts by induction, up to 512 GB of internal storage and 8 or 12 GB of RAM. Mate 30 Pro would still come with the new Android 10, but without Google apps.
Mate 30, Mate 30 Lite and Mate 30 Porsche Design
As usual, Mate 30 Pro should have simpler siblings (and also an ultra-expensive one). Evan Blass’s images show the Kill 30 with a smaller notch for the dual front camera, flat screen and two chips; he should also bring the Kirin 990 chip.
The Mate 30 Lite it is identical to the intermediate Nova 5i Pro, with hole in the upper left corner for the camera, fingerprint reader in the rear, Kirin 810 processor and quadruple rear camera, with standard sensor, ultrawide, depth and macro.
Finally, we will have the Mate 30 Pro Porsche Design. Huawei has launched luxury editions in partnership with the German automaker since Mate 9, 2016: this is an even more expensive version with the same hardware as the Pro model, but with changes in design and finish. In the case of Mate 30, the special device must have a red or black leather back.
The big question that remains is: how Huawei is going to deal, in the West, with a smartphone that cannot come embedded with Google apps – including the Play Store. We will find out at the event on Thursday (19).
O Tecnoblog will be in Munich to bring Huawei’s news first hand.
