HP Expands Notebook Battery Recall for Fire and Burn Risk | Computer

THE HP is performing a notebook battery recall which can overheat and catch fire: they are present on some Envy, Pavilion x360, ProBook and ZBook models sold worldwide between December 2015 and October 2018. Battery replacement is free, including in Brazil. If you have a branded laptop, you can download a tool to find out if it is affected.

According to HP, these notebooks enter the recall program: ProBook 64x (G2 and G3), ProBook 65x (G2 and G3), ProBook 4xx G4 (430, 440, 450, 455 and 470), HP x360 310 G2, Envy M6 , Pavilion x360 15, HP 11 and ZBook mobile workstations (17 G3, 17 G4 and Studio G3 and G4).

In addition, these products may have received a defective battery as an accessory or replacement item: ProBook 4xx G5 (430, 440, 450, 455 and 470), Envy 15 and HP Mobile Thin Clients (mt21, mt22 and mt31).

You can visit the website www.hp.com/go/batteryprogram2018 to download the HP Battery Validation Utility, which will tell you if your battery is affected by the recall. If so, HP will send an authorized technician to replace it at your home or business; he will contact you by phone to schedule an appointment within 3 business days (counting from the delivery of the new battery).

If you prefer, you can contact HP by calling 0800 709 7751 (11 3878-8338 in the state of São Paulo); dial option 5 and enter code 709 to be answered.

HP initially announced this recall program in 2018, but needed to expand it in August 2019 because “our battery supplier recently informed us about additional unidentified batteries”. Therefore, if you have a branded laptop, it is recommended to download the tool to check if it has a defective battery.

“These batteries can overheat, offering customers a risk of fire and burns,” warns HP. (If you have already received a replacement battery, you need not worry.)

Customers have the option of installing a BIOS update to add “Battery Safety Mode”, which stops charging the battery; thus, the notebook works only connected to the outlet until the part is replaced. You can get more information on this link.
