Government to increase purchase limit in duty free stores – Brazil

President Jair Bolsonaro asked the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, to prepare a decree to increase the limit of purchases in duty free stores: when returning from trips abroad, Brazilians will be able to buy up to $ 1,000 at the airport, or up to $ 500 in ground transportation, as on the border with Paraguay. Duty free stores sell products that are tax-reduced, but which are not fully exempt. They are free from the import rate, but still need to pay PIS / Cofins and the Fundaf fee (Special Fund for Development and Improvement of Inspection Activities), managed by the Federal Revenue Service.

For this reason, the government believes that raising the quota to US $ 1,000 increase tax collection around R $ 180 million per year; studies have been carried out by the Ministries of Economy and Infrastructure, according to the Value.
