O Facebook is getting a new logo, but not for the social network: instead, it’s a new visual identity for the company, which will appear in apps like Whatsapp, Instagram, Messenger and Workplace. The idea is to make it clear that these services belong to the Mark Zuckerberg conglomerate; the main application continues with the “f” on a blue background.
This year, the Instagram and WhatsApp apps won the “Facebook” notice on the login screen and in the settings. The new logo aims to make this even more explicit: it uses capital letters, can take on a colored background and can even display animations.
“The new brand uses custom typography, rounded corners, large space between letters and uppercase characters to create a visual distinction between the company and the application”, explains the Facebook Design division. The logo can adopt the colors of Instagram or the green of WhatsApp, for example, in addition to displaying an animation inside the letters.
It is worth noting that the Facebook social network icon will not change: you will still see the white “f” on a blue background in the application icon and on the web. Within the app for Android and iPhone, there will be a variant of the “facebook” logo in blue to contrast with the white background.
Few know that Instagram and WhatsApp are Facebook
In the coming weeks, Facebook’s new corporate brand will be used in all its applications and products, including Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Portal and Calibra (from the Libra cryptocurrency). “People must know which companies make the products they use,” the company said in a statement.
And a lot of people don’t know that. The Pew Research Center released in October the results of a survey conducted in the USA: the institute asked participants if they thought Instagram and WhatsApp were part of Facebook. 22% of people said “no”, while 49% were unsure.
Instagram was acquired by Facebook in 2012 for $ 1 billion. WhatsApp was purchased in 2014 after a total investment of $ 22 billion. Oculus was bought in the same year for $ 3 billion.
