O Asus Zenfone 5Z is receiving a public beta from ZenUI 6 with Android 10: The update includes a native screen recorder and a feature to speed up game performance. There are also news from Google, such as gesture navigation and smart suggestions in notifications. However, several features have been removed, such as ZeniMoji, AI battery charging and Selfie Master.
According to the XDA Developers, the update comes with Android 10 and the October security patch. Asus also recruited users for the beta test on Zenfone 6.
ZenUI 6 on ZenFone 5Z offers an experience close to the standard Android 10. You find here the dark mode in the whole system and the navigation gestures: swipe up if you want to go to the home screen, and swipe from the sides to go back. There are also suggestions for actions in the notifications: for example, there will be a link to Google Maps when you receive an address via WhatsApp.
Asus has included some of its own features, such as a native screen recorder, a special mode for one-handed use, and Game Genie for games: you can end background processes, temporarily disable notifications, record your gameplay and broadcast to the live for YouTube or Twitch.
On the other hand, Asus has decided to remove a number of features from ZenUI. You will have to say goodbye to ZeniMoji, described as “a much worse version of Apple’s Animojis”. IA charging, which promised to use artificial intelligence to extend battery life, has also been withdrawn.
In addition, the release notes mention removing the Selfie Master to embellish photos; Easy Mode, with larger icons for easy use; and Kids Mode, which allowed to release only certain applications for children and to set a usage timer.
Asus points out that, as this is a beta version, there are still some bugs to fix. Contactless payment does not work at the moment, and the transmission speed of the SD card is slow, for example. This should be fixed in the final version, which should not take long to arrive.
How to install Android 10 with ZenUI 6 on Asus Zenfone 5Z
The update with ZenUI 6 is being distributed over-the-air (OTA) to some users; there is a Zenfone 5Z beta program, the details of which are on the Asus forum.
If you want to test it now, you can download and install it manually:
- visit this Asus link and download the update;
- rename the file to UL-Z01R-WW-100.04.44.67-user.zip;
- transfer the file to the root of the Zenfone 5Z internal storage;
- restart the device, tap on the notification “System update file detected” and follow the instructions.
Remember that the Zenfone 5Z was part of Google’s Android Beta program, and received previews of Android 10 before its launch. However, this was the pure version, without ZenUI and without additional features from Asus.
