THE Asus is preparing a variant of the ROG Zephyrus S GX701 with a 17-inch screen and 300 Hz refresh rate, promising even more fluid images: this notebook for gamers has a nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics chip with overclocking and ninth generation Intel Core i7 processor.
As the Anandtech, Asus was the first company to launch notebooks with a 120 Hz screen in 2016; and pioneered laptops with 144 Hz. This year, it was one of the first to bet on 240 Hz for portable computers, with Alienware and HP.
Now, it looks like the manufacturer is testing the limits of its LCD panels: the 300 Hz screen displays a new frame every 3.3 milliseconds; this is almost as fast as the pixel response time (3 ms).
According to Asus, the higher frequency can be useful even for games with a fixed refresh rate: if the frame rate (fps) drops, “the delay between the update cycles is shorter, allowing the screen to respond more quickly to new frames produced by the graphics chip ”.
The 300 Hz screen may find its niche in e-sports, as it is 25% more agile than a 240 Hz panel. It also draws images 5 times more frames than the 60 Hz panels found in conventional laptops.
Asus will have more notebooks with 300 Hz screen in 2020
The Zephyrus S GX701 will be the first notebook with a 300 Hz screen. It will also come with a six-core Intel Core i7-9750H processor, and GeForce RTX 2080 graphics chip clocked at up to 1,230 MHz at 100 W in Turbo mode.
It will be possible to configure it with up to 32 GB of DDR4 2,666 Mhz RAM and NVMe storage. Other specifications will be released near the launch in October.
In 2020, Asus promises to launch several other notebooks with a 300 Hz screen. At the IFA fair, it already demonstrates prototypes of the ROG Zephyrus S GX502 (15 inches) and ROG Strix Scar III (15 and 17 inches) with this refresh rate.
