THE Apple displays an alert message on the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max whose drums it was exchanged by a third party, even if it is completely legitimate: the user is faced with the warning “it is not possible to check if this iPhone has a genuine battery”. The company does not intend to interrupt this practice, suggesting that customers make the exchange only in authorized assistance – which involves paying R $ 449.
“We take the safety of our customers very seriously and we want to ensure that any battery replacement is done correctly,” an Apple spokesman tells The Verge. In the USA, the company recommends going to one of the 1,800 authorized service providers to replace the component.
The iPhone XR, XS and XS Max have a microcontroller on the battery that can associate it with the logic board using an authentication key. IOS detects when the battery is changed and displays the “maintenance” message. As iFixit notes, this alert appears even if you place a genuine Apple battery, as the authentication key will be different.
This does not affect the functioning of the iPhone, but it can scare some users because they think the new battery is defective. In addition, you will not be able to see the battery capacity, nor know if it is healthy.
Apple will not remove battery alert in case of exchange
“Last year, we introduced a new feature to notify customers if we are unable to verify that a new, original battery has been installed by a certified technician following Apple’s repair processes,” says the company in the statement.
“This notification does not affect the customer’s ability to use the phone after an unauthorized repair,” explains Apple. If the iPhone battery is authorized and genuine, the company recommends returning to technical support so that it can be checked; that way, the warning will disappear.
On the other hand, if you replace the battery with a third party, you will continue to see the warning on iOS that it may not be genuine. It is a way to dissuade customers from making the switch on their own, paying less than the R $ 449 charged by Apple.
CEO Tim Cook says iPhone sales fell last year because “some customers have taken advantage of significantly reduced prices for battery replacements”. In 2018, Apple lowered the price to change the battery of the iPhone 6 or higher, after discovering that the speed of old devices is reduced to avoid unexpected shutdowns.
