THE OMG already launched several third generation Ryzen processors, and now it’s the turn of the line aimed at content creators: the 3960X Threadripper and 3970X Threadripper use the 7 nanometer Zen 2 microarchitecture, have up to 32 cores and have enhanced support for PCIe 4.0. The company will start selling both chips at the end of November, next to the Ryzen 9 3950X for gamers.
The Threadripper 3970X has 32 cores, while the Threadripper 3960X has 24; they reach a frequency of 4.5 GHz in boost mode. AMD promises up to 47% higher video encoding performance in Adobe Premiere CC 2019 compared to the similarly priced Intel Core i9-9980XE 18-core.
The processors run on the new AMD TRX40 platform with 72 lanes (transmission lanes) for PCIe 4.0 and support for up to 12 USB-C 3.1 ports (SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps). Because they use a different socket, they are not compatible with Threadripper (TR4) second generation motherboards.
AMD does not charge cheap for the Threadripper line; still, their prices are lower than Intel processors with 24 or more cores. The 3960X model will cost $ 1,399, and the 3970X will cost $ 1,999. Both will be available in the U.S. on November 25.
AMD Ryzen 9 3950X costs $ 749
On the same day, AMD will launch the Ryzen 9 3950X that it announced in June at E3. It is a $ 749 processor geared towards gamers, with 16 cores and a maximum clock of 4.7 GHz.
This chip has the highest number of cores and threads among the AMD AM4 socket compatible processors, as well as the fastest performance per thread – which should help in games.
During a presentation of the 3950X, AMD pointed out that the performance per watt is 2.3 times better than in the Core i9-9900K in Cinebench tests. The power consumption of the socket was 173 W, against 205 W on the Intel chip.
Performance in frames per second is also often equivalent or higher, even compared to the $ 1,199 Core i9-9920X:
